 Mobile-phone companies generally don't let customers call their overseas friends free. Nor do they let them dial interstate family members without charge.
So when 3 Mobile announced it would let its customers make up to 4000 minutes, or 66 hours, of free long-distance calls each month using mobile internet, they surprised a lot of industry pundits.
3 Mobile launched its unusual proposition this month, packaged in a plan to bring the internet to mobile phones in a meaningful way, including unlimited instant messaging, broadband-speed downloads, and access to goodies on your home PC from your mobile phone.
The company unashamedly admits the new service, called X-Series, is designed to "shake up" the mobile-phone industry in Australia, both in services and pricing.
Mobile-phone experts have responded positively so far, saying the plan will attract tech-savvy Australians because of its generous download allowances and capped, predictable prices.

The new service, My Fuel, now available on Telstra 3G and Next G. provides fuel pricing information in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Perth.
The name and the location of the service station are also provided.
My Fuel spokesperson, Will Sheridan said that he was excited about forming a relationship with Telstra as it would enable more people to access information that will effectively reduce their fuel spend.
“We can’t do much about the price of fuel, but we can do something to cut costs,” Mr. Sheridan said.
“My Fuel gives motorists more control over their fuel purchasing decisions. By taking advantage of price differentials between service stations, the informed motorist can save $400 to $600 per year.”
My Fuel pricing information is updated twice daily from Monday to Saturday ensuring timely and accurate information is delivered to the mobile handset.
The service gathers prices from approximately 70% of stations in major metropolitan areas, and is the most comprehensive and reliable fuel pricing information available in Australia.
A Telstra’s Mobile Content representative says that the introduction of the service reflects the company’s commitment to bring the most up to date news and information to Telstra 3G and Next G subscribers.
Mr. Sheridan says he hopes taking fuel prices mobile will change the way consumers shop for fuel and promote increased transparency across the industry.
Telstra 3G and Next G subscribers are able to access My Fuel through the BigPond portal under Info and Travel. The service is subscription-free.

In a turn around, someone pointed out to us that Vodafone now have unlock fees. It's a turn around from their "no hidden unlock fees" campaign from 2002/2003. They are clearly visible in this Vodafone FAQ.
A quick look on their site, confirms that unlock fees do not affect 3g handsets currently.

 3 has announced new cap plans today increasing value on most of their plans. Although the Video calls are the same price as voice calls, they still arn't included in the cap which is dissapointing. Three still has their 50 cent Sundays video calls special.

| Optus to spoil Telstra 3G launch |

 IN an apparent bid to upset Telstra's unveiling of its enhanced NEXT G mobile service today, Optus will finally launch a multimillion-dollar advertising campaign this weekend to promote its own 3G network.
To date, 3G services have suffered from limited coverage, questionable delivery and limited handset availability.
But Optus managing director, consumer, Warren Hardy said the company's service had reached a stage where it could focus its marketing on 3G.
Mr Hardy would not reveal the budget for the campaign but said it ran to several million dollars and would encompass a heavy TV schedule as well as print. He denied the timing of the campaign was related to moves by Telstra or other players.
The campaign will highlight a number of elements of the Optus 3G service, including live TV, instant messaging through MSN, access to internet RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds and MTV music downloads. In November last year Optus was the last of the four major carriers to launch its 3G network.
However, Mr Hardy said lack of handset availability had hampered efforts to promote the rollout. In December, one month after the launch, just 10,000 customers had signed on to Optus 3G.
In March, Optus had more than 1200 3G base stations in operation in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Canberra, according to market analyst Shara Evans, chief executive of Market Clarity.

 TELSTRA has launched its $1 billion NEXT G mobile broadband network, offering high-speed wireless mobile and internet access to 98 per cent of Australians.
SYDNEY, Oct 6 AAP -NEXT G, which boasts 12 channels of Foxtel television, sport and movie downloads, is more than 100 times bigger geographically and up to five times faster than any other 3GSM network in Australia.
Telstra says the launch will help it claim leadership in the third generation, or 3G market, by May next year.
"From today, almost every Australian is going to have access to nationwide, very high speed mobiles and internet," Telstra group managing director consumer and small business David Moffatt said.
Telstra chief executive Sol Trujillo said the world's geographically largest national 3GSM network delivered unequalled customer reach and speed across the country and was globally acknowledged as superior in its breadth and depth of coverage.
"This is an exciting day for all Australians, no matter where they live and work," Mr Trujillo said.
"No one else, here or abroad, has built and launched such a far-reaching, high speed, wireless broadband network in less than a year," he said.

Vodafone's HSDPA service would be switched on in Sydney and Melbourne metropolitan areas from October 20, the company said today.

 TELSTRA has revealed looming capacity problems on its 3G network as it offers customers data and video services such as television on mobile phones.
In evidence yesterday to the Senate inquiry into media ownership laws, Telstra also confirmed "preliminary" discussions with the competition watchdog over whether the company would be allowed to bid for new digital licences offering mobile television.
Jane van Beelen, deputy director of regulatory issues at Telstra, confirmed yesterday that problems were looming on its 3G networks.
"If the take-up of video services over 3G meets projections there will be a need to address this issue," she said. "At some point there will be a need for additional capacity.
"Once demand gets to a certain point there will be need for additional capacity to be able to manage and provide services at the right quality."
Telstra already operates a 3G network but will launch another network, designed to replace its Australia-wide CDMA service, next Friday. Both networks could encounter capacity problems as more video is streamed to customers, using up vast amounts of bandwidth.
